Karl “Little D” Jordan was discovered deceased after being stabbed during a fight while he was behind bars. According to reports, a scuffle broke out at Sunset Park’s Metropolitan Detention Center between multiple inmates, including the victim. While the victim was fatally stabbed, two other inmates were hospitalized.
Karl Jordan was serving time in the notoriously violent jail after being convicted of killing Jason Mizell in 2002. Jordan was arrested and put in jail in 2020 after years of investigating what happened to Mizell, also known as Jam Master Jay, a well-known member of the hip hop group Run-DMC.
According to court records, Jam Master Jay was involved in a cocaine drug ring in the 1990s up until his death.
Jam Master Jay had allegedly purchased 10kg of cocaine from the dark market on consignment from a California supplier. This load was intended to be given to another suspect, Ronald Washington, who would take the drugs to Maryland and hand them off to Jordan. At that point, Jordan was supposed to sell the goods. Both Washington and Jordan would’ve received around $200,000 for their role in the drug deal.
Unfortunately for the duo, Jam Master Jay decided to cut the two out of the deal after a dispute arose between Washington and other individuals. After getting squeezed out, Washington and Jordan started their own narcotics ring and eventually took revenge against Jam Master Jay by slaying him at his recording studio.
At the time of his death, Jam Master Jay was playing a video game with a friend while reviewing paperwork with a business manager. Jordan reportedly fired a shot at close range, which fatally wounded Jam Master Jay in the head.
Now, Jordan has faced his own untimely end after the stabbing at the correctional facility. Sunset Park’s Metropolitan Detention Center is unfortunately known for regular inmate on inmate violence.
In fact, just one week prior to this fatal stabbing, 25 inmates at the same correctional facility were charged with new crimes of committing violent assaults against other inmates.
Do Inmates Have the Right to Safety from Violence Behind Bars?
Considering the fact that jails and prisons are intended to house the most violent offenders, it makes sense that violent incidents occur regularly in correctional institutions.
That said, correctional facilities still have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps to protect the safety of inmates from violence. These facilities cannot stand by and allow violent attacks to occur without attempting to stop the violence, taking steps to protect anyone injured, and making any changes necessary to prevent future violent outbreaks.
