24-year-old Javone Duncan has been sentenced to spend the next 15 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter. According to court records, Duncan was convicted as a result of an incident stemming back to March 2022 that was fatal for a 17-year-old girl.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that Duncan and the young victim, Raelynn Cameron, were talking at around 10:55 P.M. at 790 Elderts Lane. Duncan reportedly made a romantic advance towards the victim and was rejected.
That’s when Duncan reportedly shot the victim in the chest once. He then fled away on foot without attempting to assist the victim or call for help.
Later that night, Duncan was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. After investigating what happened, police learned that witnesses had seen Duncan displaying similar reckless behavior earlier in the evening. According to reports, the suspect was at a party with the witnesses. He was talking to a different young woman, though the topic of discussion is unknown. Witnesses saw the suspect pull a gun on the woman. He then proceeded to intimidate her by turning the safety on and off. The witnesses say they tried to warn Duncan that his behavior was reckless, but he clearly did not take heed to his friend’s warnings.
Throughout the trial, enough evidence was produced to produce a conviction. Supreme Court Justice Heidi Cesare has sentenced Duncan to 15 years in prison.
