Lawlessness appears to be increasing in Brooklyn and throughout the entire state of New York. Police are dismayed to report that a brazen attack occurred recently in Prospect Park, but thankfully the suspect has been sentenced to spend the next 15 years to life in prison.
Reports show that 28-year-old Carlis Clarke committed his attack on March 11, 2019. At around 4:30 P.M. in broad daylight, the suspect noticed a 25-year-old woman walking on a pathway.
Suddenly, he grabbed the woman and dragged her into the woods. There, he sexually assaulted her. Thankfully, a loud unidentified noise distracted Clarke just long enough for the victim to run away and make an official police report about what happened.
Unfortunately, the police didn’t have enough information to track down the suspect. He struck again on February 23, 2021. This time, the culprit was in the same park watching the same walkway. He noticed a 33-year-old woman walking down the path, and he used the same method of pulling her into the woods before assaulting her. Thankfully, a person passing by the area heard the victim’s cries for help and rushed to the area. This caused the suspect to flee away.
This time, though, the good Samaritan was already on the phone with 911 operators reporting the incident. This helped police have the time to gather up surveillance footage that showed the culprit’s face. Not long after the second attack, authorities were able to locate and arrest Clarke. Detectives obtained a DNA sample from the culprit and promptly connected it to DNA obtained from the 2019 attack. This DNA was sourced from a scarf on the day of the attack.
As a result of the suspect’s actions, he was charged with predatory sexual assault. He was convicted and will serve up to 15 years behind bars.
The Consequences of Getting Convicted of a Sex Crime
Have you been accused of committing a sex-related crime? If so, then it’s important to know that the consequences of your actions could extend far past a prison sentence if you get convicted.
A sex crime conviction will likely impact the rest of your life. For one, you will likely serve time in jail or prison, which will have irreversible impacts on your personal relationships, professional career, and overall quality of life. In general, the longer you are behind bars, the greater the impact will be once you are finally released.
On top of that, you could also get ordered to pay significant fees and fines. You’ll also have no choice but to submit your personal information to the sexual offender registry. This registry is a database that will publicly display your name, a recent photograph of you, and your address. Being a part of the sex offender registry means you’ll face important restrictions depending on your specific charges.
You could be restricted from being around schools, working around children, accessing certain websites, or visiting certain individuals. Make sure you fully understand the scope of your restrictions and remain compliant. Violating these terms could have you back behind bars.
