Dupreme Williams, a 43-year-old resident of Far Rockaway, has been sentenced to serve seven years in prison after being convicted of committing several violent robberies throughout Brooklyn. According to police, at least three horrific attacks occurred in 2024 alone.
In one incident on the day before Valentine’s Day, Williams reportedly saw a 50-year-old woman walking along the road near Flatbush Avenue Extension and Fleet Street. Since no one else was around, he attacked her, admitting to striking her multiple times before stealing her AirPods.
Emboldened by this attack, the suspect later saw a 73-year-old man riding a southbound F train at York Street talking on his cellphone, and he decided to strike. Williams punched the victim before stealing his phone and running away.
A few weeks later in March, Williams randomly attacked another man on Pitkin Avenue, punching him in the face. While he wasn’t able to steal anything from this victim, police believe that was the purpose of the attack.
After this string of violence, Williams was taken into police custody on March 28. District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attacks “unprovoked incidents,” and further stated that the suspect’s conviction sent a “strong message that violence in Brooklyn will be met with serious consequences.” This message is very important to publicize since random attacks of violence have been on the rise throughout the state and nation in recent years.
Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, landing him seven years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.
The Penalties Associated with Violent Robberies in Brooklyn
At first glance, it might seem like Williams did not attempt to defend himself against the charges considering he pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, but his sentence is actually fairly reasonable considering the criminal act he is accused of committing.
In Brooklyn, second-degree robbery carries a minimum sentence of 3.5 years and a maximum sentence of up to 15 years, so Williams’ seven-year sentence is right in the middle. What’s more, Williams is only facing a conviction for one second-degree robbery charge despite being accused of committing at least three violent incidents over the past year alone. If Williams was individually charged for each incident, then his sentence could’ve potentially been seven years for each criminal attack.
Sometimes, when there is significant evidence against you, your best legal strategy might be to agree to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence or less severe charges being levied against you. You should never make this type of deal without running it by a lawyer first, though, because you want to make sure that you’re getting a fair shot at justice.
Have you recently been charged with a crime in Brooklyn? If so, then it’s in your best interest to consider hiring an attorney. A lawyer will go over your charges with you to ensure you understand what you’re being accused of as well as the potential consequences of that charge. Together, you and your lawyer can strategize on the best way to defend yourself.
