A heartbreaking tragedy in Sunset Park has left the Brooklyn community reeling.
A 50-year-old man, Liyong Ye, was just sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of her two young children.
On June 17, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced the sentencing. Ye pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder for the horrific attack that happened on August 23, 2023.
According to court records, Ye attacked 43-year-old Zhao Zhao and her children, who were just 5 and 3 years old, inside their apartment on 531 52nd Street.
He beat them with a hammer and strangled Zhao. The children were critically injured but survived after emergency treatment at Bellevue Hospital and months of rehabilitation. Tragically, Zhao died from severe blunt force trauma.
The couple had been arguing about living conditions in their overcrowded apartment, which they shared with other families and roommates.
A roommate walked in on the scene, called 911, and Ye was arrested not long after. This case has hit many locals hard, sparking fresh conversations about the devastating impact of domestic violence.
A Devastating Loss for the Family
Cases like this just destroy families. Those two little kids are going to carry the scars from that awful day for the rest of their lives, and their loved ones are left trying to make sense of the unthinkable while searching for any bit of closure.
Domestic violence is messy and complicated, and quite often its hurt spreads through the entire community.
The Role of the Justice System and Support for Those Affected
At least in this case, the justice system held the person responsible accountable.
Still, for families and survivors left dealing with the aftermath of domestic violence, the legal process can be long, confusing, and completely exhausting.
Having someone who knows how things work can make a big difference — helping families understand their rights, navigate the court system, and connect with the protections and resources available.
If you or someone you care about is going through this, whether you’re trying to find safety, supporting a loved one, or facing related legal issues, reaching out for compassionate, experienced legal support can really help during one of the hardest times.
