Former NBA Player Malik Beasley Pleads Not Guilty to Gambling Charges

NYPD gun bust

Former NBA guard Malik Beasley walked into a Brooklyn federal courtroom this week and pleaded not guilty to gambling-related charges.

The case is getting attention mostly because of who he is (he played for teams like the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves) and because federal gambling cases can carry serious consequences if things don’t go your way.

Beasley is accused of being involved in an illegal gambling operation. The charges were filed in the Eastern District of New York, and he showed up at the Brooklyn federal courthouse on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Here’s What We Know

Federal gambling prosecutions usually target people accused of running or taking part in illegal betting that crosses state lines, especially when there’s a lot of money moving around. Investigators look at things like bank transfers, text messages, phone records, and talk to witnesses.

Right now, not all the specific details about Beasley’s alleged role have come out publicly. But these kinds of charges can lead to real prison time if a jury convicts.

What Comes Next

Pleading not guilty is the usual first move. After that, the case enters the discovery phase, where the prosecution must hand over its evidence, and the defense has time to review it and plan its response.

There will likely be pretrial hearings, motions, and negotiations. If they can’t reach a deal, it heads to trial. Federal cases like this tend to move slowly and can feel pretty intense, especially when the person involved has a public name.

The early choices, like what evidence to fight and whether to negotiate, often shape how the whole thing turns out.

Athletes and Gambling Trouble

We’ve seen more pro athletes run into legal problems with gambling lately. Legal sports betting has made things blurry for some players, but federal law still cracks down hard on certain kinds of operations.
